Habattach – Single Storey Extensions – What are my options?

Sitting in your living room, watching Mr Tumble for what feels like the 100th time, you take a look at the four walls cluttered with mementos and knick-knacks, the floor a playground of discarded toys and you make your decision there and then, this house needs more space!
In recent times, improving the home is becoming much more popular than moving homes, there has been a surge in the construction industry to offer up a variety of extension options – particularly single storey extension options. Let’s take a look at what’s available.
First up, what types of single storey extensions are there? These are the three most common types:
Side return extension – So this is where you knock through to the narrow alleyway to the side of your home. Even by extending sideways by a few feet can leave drastic results! Side return extensions are particularly popular on Edwardian homes.
Rear extension – Probably the type of extension you’ll see most often, this is where you extend the back of your home for more space. Of course, the size of this extension depends on the amount of space you have to extend backwards!
Wraparound – Combining the side return and rear extension, this is the best of both worlds option! These types of extensions are a lot more prevalent in period properties and modern homes.
Now let’s talk roof options. Because we’re only looking at single storey extensions, your roofing options have suddenly opened up, how exciting!
Gabled roof – This can make the extension look and feel a bit more spacious. It also looks fabulous from the outside too.
Sloping roof – Sloping the roof towards the original house will help blend your new extension in with the existing. You can even choose the same roof tiles too, creating a seamless look.
Flat roof – Possibly the most popular choice, flat roof also happens to be the most economical option too. This also gives you the opportunity to get creative with your roof too, current choices include cladding it in metal, incorporating glazing or the increasingly admired green roof option (not to brag but this one is included in our Habattach offering!).
Skylights – A skylight is a great way to allow in more natural light and are a fairly cost-effective way to do so, even better this can be introduced to all of the above roofing options.
Speaking of light, moving on to windows and doors! A way to really make your own mark on your extension project, is to have a play with the types of windows and doors that are on offer.
Bifolding/sliding – Such a hugely popular choice for single storey extensions, having one, level surface flowing from outside to inside is also a fantastic way to integrate the two spaces together.
Crittall style – Steel framed windows and doors are really on trend and are great for creating a striking look on all types of homes.
Feature – Working well as part of a contemporary design single storey extension, feature windows are definitely on the up. Usually coupled with a window seat, these style windows are being seen more and more, it’s the perfect Insta spot too!

How about the finish?

Matching brickwork: This keeps the extension sympathetic to the style of the home.
Rendering: A popular choice for homeowners is to render the original home and new extension to create a seamless look. Rendering only the extension allows it to stand out as a feature on your home.
Cladding: With many options from timber, cement board or steel cladding available, this is a super trendy option.
